Current situation

Spread across a chain of thousands of islands between Asia and Australia, Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population and Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. Indonesian citizens enjoy both political rights and civil liberties and Indonesia has an increasingly positive human rights track record.

Indonesia and the Netherlands maintain close relations. Indonesia is a partner country of the Netherlands in development cooperation. Cultural relations between the two countries are close owing to their shared history.

The European Union and Indonesia have made significant strides in building a modern, outward-looking partnership. This is rooted in thriving trade links, a shared attachment to advancing democracy and human rights, action on climate change and terrorism at home and abroad and expanding people-to-people links.

CILC in Indonesia

CILC was founded in 1985 at the initiative of the Netherlands ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice and Education to implement a broad, multi-annual national program for academic and judicial cooperation with Indonesia. Since then, CILC has continued to provide support to Indonesian justice sector institutions through a broad range of projects (from small trainings in legislative drafting to comprehensive legal reforms and sector-wide assistance).
