Project description

The purpose of this project was to provide technical and advisory services to ensure the effective and timely implementation of the Justice component of the Governance Programme, by delivering the following results:

Result 1: Access to Justice enhanced

(i) Prepared and agreed about an overview of responsibilities, complementarities and delineation of the tripartite legal system and the alternative dispute resolution system; (ii) prepared and implemented information campaigns on the justice system and access to justice mechanisms (civic rights education); (iii) mapping of the customary law system and its compliance with human rights standards, development and organization of sensitisation and sharing of good practices workshops for Alkalos (chief of village, first entry point to justice system for many people); (iv) enhanced alternative dispute resolution system.

Result 2: Legal education, research skills and training upgraded

Supported the (i) development and implementation of an university exchange programme; (ii) training of future legal practitioners (barristers), (iii) continuous training for judges and court staff; (iv) development of commented jurisprudence and legal research; (v) development and distribution of reference materials for stakeholders; (vi) depending on the evolution of the sector governance and human rights, reviewed the existing procedures /treatment of cases and support the elaboration and implementation of a case management manual.
